What To Wear on a Cruise Vacation day, evening & formal night

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet– especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion. Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems. In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

The ultimate cruise vibe can be defined by fun, flowy designs and outfits that can easily transition from the pool or beach to lunch and the cocktail lounge later. Other theme nights include Carnival's Mexican Fiesta, Norwegian's White Hot Party and Royal Caribbean's '70s and '80s theme parties. Some cruise lines (think Cunard or Crystal) are more formal than others -- and across all lines interpretations of "formal" can vary.

Do you have to dress up on a cruise?

Various clothing options are essential to accommodate different activities and dress codes onboard. This can include casual, comfortable outfits for daytime activities and more formal attire for special events or evenings. T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, and skirts are all perfectly fine clothes to wear on a cruise ship to have lunch in the Oceanview Cafe and other restaurants with a casual dress code. You can also dine in casual pool clothes at the snack bar located next to the pool deck. Men may wear slacks with collared dress shirts or sweaters, but jackets are optional. Women should choose dresses, pantsuits or skirts or slacks with nice tops.

Deciding what to wear on a cruise port day, will depend on your plans and excursions. If you’re going to the beach, you can wear a bathing suit under a light sundress or cover up. I recommend using your time wisely and trying to see as much as you can.

We've come up with the ultimate list of proper attires to bring on any cruise. Moreover, it is divided according to the categories for men, women, and kids/toddlers. Planning is good, so research your cruise shore excursion programs and activities. Anyways, most of the time, you will be roaming in your swimsuits and flip-flops. For ladies, dressing in an evening gown, cocktail dress, or fancy outfit is perfect.

So, it's worthy of checking those limits and packing accordingly. Moreover, many cruise lines allow only one luggage bag with one person. Jeans, T-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes are not allowed in any public area in the evenings, apart from the pool area. In the dining rooms, items such as shorts, pool wear and baseball caps are not permitted; shoes must be worn at all times. Jeans are permitted as long as they aren't fraying and don't have holes.

Tips on Kids/toddlers Clothing

Thoughtfully curated cruise ship outfits ensure adherence to the cruise line dress code and give you the confidence to partake in every activity easily. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on deck or indulging in a gourmet dinner under the stars, the right outfits to wear on a cruise can significantly enhance your overall enjoyment. Many cruise lines will not let you in the ship’s restaurants, bars or reception if you just have swimwear on. On Celebrity Cruises, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible while onboard.

Australian brand Bondi Born has elegant separates you can mix and match that run the coverage range. And for men, Fair Harbor makes trunks that can scream “I’m on a boat! ” (check out the Ozone) while also giving yacht club vibes (see the nautical stripe Anchor). If you want to get creative and bring your own costume, check in with your cruise line beforehand to see whether a theme night is offered. Otherwise, most cruise lines have accessories for purchase onboard. If you feel confused or uninspired about what to pack for your next cruise, we're here to decipher the dress codes with photos of stylish examples of acceptable cruisewear.

Most cruise lines are fine with children wearing nice shorts in the dining room and restaurants for evening dinners. Yet, we weren’t out of place and certainly at that time, most men were either in a dark suit or tuxedo. Most women wore long gowns or cocktail dresses on formal nights on a cruise. If you have time to change before heading to the cruise ship on embarkation day, wear something comfortable that you also feel good in. For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids. Just throw on a collared shirt and slip-on penny loafers, and you're good to go. In general, the same rules apply to men and women when it comes to packing for a cruise.

The Sconset and Edgarton SeaWell Quarter Zip look particularly apropos with a backdrop of flowing seas. Beyond clothing, ensure you have all the essential documents and items for your trip. Maximizing your luggage space can make packing and unpacking more efficient. While jewelry adds a touch of glam, a trusty timepiece ensures you’re always on schedule.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony. For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room.
